Well, new research from Tufts University suggests that even a can of 12 ounces of soda a day counts as a steady, unmoderated consumption of soda. And daily drinkers face a significantly higher risk of prediabetes and an increase in insulin resistance.
Published in the Journal of Nutrition, The study followed 1685 adults for 14 years, keeping a record of the sugary drinks that they consumed. For the purposes of the study, sugary drinks include soda, lemonade and fruit punch, but not fruit juices. The researchers also monitored the consumption of diet soft drinks.
The results of the study revealed that daily drinkers had a 46% higher risk of diabetes after 14-year testing. In addition, consumers have established 8% higher insulin resistance scores. Insulin resistance is a major factor in type 2 diabetes, a growing epidemic in the United States affecting 29 million US adults.
“Although our study can not establish causality, our results suggest that a high intake of sugary drinks increases the chances of developing warning signs of type 2 diabetes. are not done, people with prediabetes are on the developmental trajectory of diabetes, “said Nicola McKeown, Ph.D.
The study did not find a similar correlation between diet soda and the increase in insulin resistance and prediabetes level.
